About

The scope of this project is to investigate various danger zones caused by rainfall in the community of Alaska in Mamelodi. We will identify high risk zones and make community members aware if their establishment is at risk as well as inform the community members of precautionary measures they can take to decrease their risk.

As the structures in Alaska are informal and therefore do not have adequate foundations, slopes that would otherwise be considered as safe are considered dangerous. As this area mainly receives seasonal rainfall, and due to the climate of the area, only convectional rainfall (thunderstorms) will be considered in this project, thus a low level of infiltration will be assumed, meaning that steep slopes combined with water flows result in risk zones.
